A GST-compliant delivery challan for transporting goods without a sale - job work, exhibitions, approvals, and branch transfers.
A delivery challan is required when goods are moved from one place to another without an actual sale taking place. Under GST Rule 55 of the CGST Rules, a delivery challan must accompany goods in specific scenarios: goods sent on approval or sale-or-return basis, goods sent for job work processing, goods transferred between the supplier own premises (branch transfers), and goods sent for exhibition or display. This template covers all these scenarios with the appropriate fields and declarations. Unlike a tax invoice, a delivery challan does not necessarily create a tax liability at the time of dispatch - the tax becomes applicable only when the goods are eventually sold or when the prescribed return period expires. The template includes a "Purpose of Movement" field which is critical for customs and GST authorities during transit inspections. It also includes fields for vehicle number and transporter details, as goods in transit may be inspected under Section 68 of the CGST Act. The e-way bill reference is mandatory when the consignment value exceeds Rs 50,000. The template supports both the original dispatch challan and the return challan (when goods come back unsold or after job work completion).
Manufacturers sending goods for job work, businesses transferring stock between branches or warehouses, traders sending goods on approval basis, companies sending products for exhibitions, and any business that needs to transport goods without an immediate sale.
Step 1: Enter your business details and GSTIN. Step 2: Select the purpose of movement (Job Work, Exhibition, Approval, Branch Transfer, etc.). Step 3: Enter the consignee details. Step 4: List the goods with HSN codes, quantities, and estimated value. Step 5: Add vehicle number and transporter details. Step 6: Generate e-way bill if value exceeds Rs 50,000. Step 7: Print in triplicate: original for consignee, duplicate for transporter, triplicate for consignor.
Rule 55 of CGST Rules requires delivery challans for goods movement without sale. Must be serially numbered and printed in triplicate. E-way bill mandatory for consignment value above Rs 50,000. For job work, goods must be returned within 1 year (goods) or 3 years (capital goods) under Section 143. If not returned within the prescribed period, it is treated as supply and tax becomes applicable. The challan must include: date, challan number, supplier details, recipient details, HSN code, quantity, description, taxable value, and place of supply.
