Your buyer owes you ₹45,000. You send a WhatsApp reminder. The buyer reads it, agrees to pay, and then says: "Send me your account details."
Now you type out your bank account number, IFSC code, and UPI ID. The buyer copies it, opens their banking app, pastes it in, double-checks the details, enters the amount, and finally hits send. Half the time they get distracted and pay later. Or never.
What if instead, you sent a single link? The buyer taps it, their UPI app opens with the amount pre-filled, they enter their PIN, and the money is in your account in 10 seconds.
That is what a UPI payment link does. This guide shows you exactly how to create one — for free — and send it via WhatsApp so your buyers can pay you in one tap.
What Is a UPI Payment Link?
A UPI payment link is a clickable URL that opens the buyer's UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, or any UPI app) with your payment details pre-filled. The buyer does not need to manually enter your UPI ID, account number, or the amount. Everything is ready — they just authenticate and pay.
The link follows a standard format called the UPI deep link specification:
upi://pay?pa=YOUR_UPI_ID&pn=YOUR_NAME&am=AMOUNT&cu=INR&tn=DESCRIPTION
When a buyer clicks this link on their phone, Android automatically opens their default UPI app with all fields filled in.
UPI payment links are universal — they work with Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, and any other UPI-enabled app. The buyer does not need a specific app. Whatever UPI app they have installed will handle the link.
Method 1: Create a UPI Payment Link Manually (Free)
You can create a UPI deep link right now without any tool or app. Here is the format:
upi://pay?pa=yourname@upi&pn=Your Business Name&am=45000&cu=INR&tn=Payment for Invoice 123
Replace the parameters:
UPI Link Parameters
Example for a ₹45,000 payment:
upi://pay?pa=sharma.steel@okaxis&pn=Sharma%20Steel&am=45000&cu=INR&tn=Invoice%20456%20March%202026
Replace spaces with %20 in the URL. "Sharma Steel" becomes "Sharma%20Steel". If you skip this, the link may break on some UPI apps.
The limitation: This upi:// link only works when tapped on a phone — it does not work in desktop browsers. For a link that works everywhere (desktop and mobile), you need a web-based payment page. More on that in Method 3.
Method 2: Use Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm Business
Each major UPI app has a built-in way to create payment request links:
Google Pay
Tap on 'New payment' or the search bar
Choose the buyer or enter their phone number
Type the amount you want to request
GPay sends a payment request notification to the buyer
Pros: Easy, the buyer gets a push notification. Cons: Only works if the buyer also uses Google Pay. You cannot customize the message or include invoice details.
PhonePe Business
PhonePe's merchant dashboard lets you generate payment links that you can share via WhatsApp:
- Log into PhonePe Business dashboard
- Go to "Payment Links" section
- Enter amount, description, and expiry date
- Copy the generated link
- Paste it into your WhatsApp message
Pros: Works with all UPI apps (not just PhonePe). You get a dashboard to track which links were paid. Cons: Requires a PhonePe Business account. Links have an expiry date.
Paytm for Business
Paytm Business offers a similar payment link generator through their merchant dashboard. The flow is nearly identical to PhonePe.
All of these require you to manually create a new payment link for every buyer, every time. When you have 50 buyers with different amounts due on different dates, you are spending an hour a day just generating and sending links. That is the problem GetPaidly solves — every reminder automatically includes the right UPI link for the right buyer with the right amount.
Method 3: Create a Web-Based Payment Page with UPI
The most professional approach is a payment page — a web URL that shows the payment amount and a "Pay with UPI" button. When the buyer taps the button on mobile, it opens their UPI app. On desktop, it shows a QR code they can scan.
This is what GetPaidly generates for every transaction automatically. Here is how the flow works:
"Sharma Steel 45000 due 15 days" — via WhatsApp to GetPaidly
GetPaidly generates getpaidly.com/pay/abc123 with the exact amount, buyer name, and your UPI details
Every auto-reminder includes this payment page URL. Buyer taps it.
On mobile: UPI app opens with amount pre-filled. On desktop: QR code shown to scan.
AI verifies the payment. Transaction marked as paid. You get notified.

How to Send the UPI Link via WhatsApp
Once you have your UPI payment link (from any method above), here is how to send it effectively on WhatsApp:
The Wrong Way
Please pay ₹45000. My UPI ID is sharma.steel@okaxis
This requires the buyer to manually open their UPI app, search for your ID, type the amount, and remember the invoice number. Too many steps. Most buyers will "do it later" and forget.
The Right Way
Hi Ratan ji, your payment of ₹45,000 for March order is due today. Tap below to pay instantly via UPI — takes 10 seconds:
If you have already paid, please share the screenshot. Thank you!
This message:
- States the exact amount and what it is for
- Includes a clickable payment link
- Sets the expectation ("10 seconds")
- Offers an alternative if already paid
- Ends with gratitude, not pressure
When you send a payment page URL (not a raw upi:// link), WhatsApp shows a rich link preview with the page title and description. This looks professional and increases the click-through rate by 3x compared to a raw URL.
UPI Payment Link Best Practices
1. Always pre-fill the amount. A link without an amount forces the buyer to type it in — and they might type the wrong number. Always include the am parameter with the exact amount due.
2. Include a transaction note. The tn parameter shows up in the buyer's UPI app as the payment description. Use it to reference the invoice or order: "Invoice 456 March 2026" is better than "Payment" because it helps both parties reconcile later.
3. Test your links before sending. Tap your own UPI link on your phone to make sure it opens the correct UPI app with the right amount and your correct UPI ID. A broken link means zero payments.
4. Use HTTPS payment pages for large amounts. For payments above ₹10,000, buyers are more cautious. A branded payment page at your domain (getpaidly.com/pay/...) builds more trust than a raw upi:// deep link that buyers may not recognize.
5. Send the link in the reminder message, not separately. The payment link should be part of the reminder, not a separate follow-up. Buyers lose context when the link comes in a different message.
6. Track which links get paid. If you are sending links manually, you have no way to know if the buyer clicked the link but did not complete payment. Payment page solutions like GetPaidly track every click and payment, giving you data to follow up intelligently.
Combining UPI Links with WhatsApp Automation
The ultimate payment collection setup combines three things:
- Automatic reminders that go out at the right time (before and after due date)
- UPI payment links embedded in every reminder (one tap to pay)
- Payment verification that confirms the payment without manual checking
This is exactly what GetPaidly does. You add a due once — "Sharma Steel 45000 due 15 days" — and the system handles everything: reminders go out automatically, each with a unique UPI payment page, and when the buyer pays, AI verifies the payment from their screenshot.
No manual link creation. No copying UPI IDs. No checking bank statements. Just money in your account, on time.
Common Questions About UPI Payment Links
Can I create UPI links for free?
Yes. The upi:// deep link format is free and requires no tool. You can type it manually. For web-based payment pages, tools like GetPaidly generate them automatically for every transaction.
Do buyers need to install a specific app? No. UPI payment links work with any UPI-enabled app — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, and 50+ others. The buyer's phone automatically opens whichever UPI app they have installed.
Is there a limit on UPI payment amounts? Yes. The per-transaction UPI limit is ₹1,00,000 (₹1 lakh) for most banks. Some banks allow up to ₹2,00,000 for specific categories. For amounts above the limit, the buyer would need to make multiple payments or use NEFT/RTGS.
Are UPI payment links secure? Yes. UPI payments require the buyer to authenticate with their UPI PIN on their own device. The payment link only pre-fills the payee details and amount — it cannot initiate a payment without the buyer's active authentication. No money moves without the buyer entering their PIN.
Can I send UPI links to buyers outside India? UPI is currently available only in India. For international buyers, you would need alternative payment methods like international bank transfers, PayPal, or Wise. GetPaidly supports multi-currency for international businesses.
