A GST invoice is a tax document issued by a registered supplier for every taxable supply of goods or services. It must contain specific information mandated by Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017, including supplier and recipient details, HSN/SAC codes, tax rates, and amounts.
Intra-state supply (supplier and buyer in the same state): GST is split equally into CGST (Central) and SGST (State). Example: 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
Inter-state supply (different states): The full GST is charged as IGST (Integrated). Example: 18% GST = 18% IGST.
Supplier name, GSTIN, address; consecutive serial number; date; recipient details; HSN/SAC code; description, quantity, unit; taxable value; tax rate and amount; total value; place of supply for inter-state; and supplier signature.
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes are for goods. SAC (Services Accounting Codes) are for services. HSN codes are 4-8 digits, SAC codes are 6 digits.
